INFRASTRUCTURE

HCI

Compute, storage, and (sometimes) networking collapsed into commodity x86 nodes managed as one cluster, software-defined.

IN PRACTICE

HCI shines for branch and edge data centers (Scale Computing, Nutanix). For a 500-VM scale-out core, traditional SAN-attached compute is often still cheaper per workload.
