DATA PROTECTION

RPO

The maximum amount of data, measured in time, that an organization can afford to lose during an outage. An RPO of one hour means backups must capture data at least once per hour, so that no more than one hour of work is ever lost.

IN PRACTICE

A trading firm may require an RPO measured in seconds, driving the need for synchronous replication. A small office may accept an RPO of 24 hours and run nightly backups. RPO is always paired with RTO when designing disaster recovery.
