Bandwidth

The maximum rate at which data can be transferred over a connection, the size of the pipe. Bandwidth is the theoretical ceiling; throughput is what you actually get.

IN PRACTICE

Upgrading from a 100 Mbps to a 1 Gbps circuit increases bandwidth tenfold, but if the application is latency-bound, the user may not feel the difference.
