NETWORKING

Throughput

The actual rate of successful data transfer over a connection, measured in bits per second. Throughput is usually lower than rated bandwidth because of overhead, congestion, and protocol limits.

IN PRACTICE

A 1 Gbps circuit may deliver 940 Mbps of real throughput after overhead. A circuit audit measures actual throughput, not just the number on the contract.
